Apnea often strikes premature babies
Layne Melzer awoke at 8 am Jan. 6 and looked at his son, 6 weeks old, Shane, beside him. Almost Every morning, he was the baby woke him at dawn with loud cries of food, while Melzer was surprised to find Shane still asleep. Then took a closer look. Shane skin was dark, and not breathing. Melzer shook him temporarily, but it does not wake the baby. Its color is darker now. Blue.
Shouting to his wife to call 911, took Shane Melzer and shook him – hard this time. Baby opened my eyes to a point, but his eyes were empty.
Trying desperately to remember the resuscitation, put his mouth over Shane Melzer and beaten twice. Then she turned the child over and patted on the back. He slapped again, then a third time. Suddenly, Shane gasped and began to mourn. A moment later, the rescue team arrived.
The crisis, however, was far from complete. At noon, Shane was admitted to Children's Hospital of Orange County with a provisional diagnosis of severe apnea.
The word apnea comes from the Latin words A and tires, which means without air. Medically, pauses in breathing.
The main consequence of Sleep Apnea is an injury to the brain and heart due to frequent periods of low oxygen. Babies untreated sleep apnea may, in recent years, learning and behavioral problems are even cerebral palsy diseases associated with brain damage.
Shane Central Apnea Melzer problem was exacerbated by a viral infection.
Shane breathing stops were frequent, long, responsible for repeated episodes of bradycardia – The medical term for a rate abnormally slow heartbeat. He met all the criteria for the diagnosis of severe apnea. Two days after being admitted to CHOC, was transferred to the unit intensive care.
Deteriorated. At 3:30 in the morning after his transfer, Melzers were awakened by a call from a doctor in the unit. Shane apnea was so bad that now needed the help of a respirator to survive, said the doctor. But Shane was lucky to be in a hospital specialized in treating apnea.
Shane apnea does not cause more problems. Your breathing stops were never serious enough to cause monitor, report to parents, and all other respects, it is booming.
Is SIDS and sleep apnea related?
One study suggests that the syndrome of sudden death (SIDS) may be more common in families who suffer from Sleep Apnea Disorder for adults
Although the cause of sudden death continues remains a mystery, the new evidence supports the idea that both are caused by disorders of the upper respiratory tract reduced due to the way it was formed skull a feature that is inherited.
The study compared the number of SIDS cases in 29 families with sleep apnea and 35 families without apnea sleep. The researchers had families to complete questionnaires on the incidence of mortality. Subjects Data from four generations of each family to the 352 family members sleep apnea and 408 family members were covered control.
Families can sleep apnea – when breathing stops for short periods during the sleep and can lead to Sleeping Problems or Snoring – reported eight unexplained deaths. The control families reported no deaths unexplained, unexpected infant, although one baby had died of maternal-infant incompatibility of blood type. Two families of sleep apnea reported more than one SIDS death. In one case, a pair of twins had died without explanation. When researchers examined the facial structure of four six families reported the death of SIDS were found forms were significantly different from normal family.
The results suggest that SIDS and sleep apnea are associated with adults and that both could result from obstructive apnea due to facial structure narrowing of the airways.
Sleep apnea runs in families. Other studies have suggested that Some families may be at increased risk of SIDS, but like most things on SIDS, is still under debate. This is a touchy subject. The idea was that apnea Sleep may be the final common pathway of sudden death, but not necessarily so. The problem with research of this syndrome is nobody has ever seen a dead SIDS.
In children who often appear tired or have trouble staying awake in school, check apnea can cause the adenoids or tonsils abnormally high.
Another study found that babies considered at high risk of SIDS – those who had stopped breathing and was found by chance and rose – "It was more likely to have a parent with symptoms of sleep apnea, etc. This could support the idea that sleep apnea is linked to SIDS. But how are related and if it is responsible is another matter.
